Impact Windows Engineered to Withstand Hurricanes and Home Runs

Certain Pella® windows can put a stop to flying baseballs and others can resist hurricane-force winds. How?

In regard to hurricane-resistance, Pella HurricaneShield® windows and patio doors rated to ASTM E1996 missile D rating are rigorously tested for impact resistance.

Tests consist of blasting a two-by-four at the window to ensure glass remains intact. We use our hurricane cannon to launch the wood, which travels 50 feet per second.

It Started with Hurricane Testing

We concluded, if we could design a hurricane window with impact-resistant glass, surely we could come up with a solution that could protect from home runs from Major League Baseball teams.

When Pella was asked to help supply a historic building near Wrigley Field with home run-resistant windows, that’s just what we did.

We overhauled our hurricane cannon to evaluate the home run-resistant windows. We shot baseballs from the cannon at an angle and speed that would recreate the speed of a home run.

Our tempered glass weathered the hits best because it’s tougher and safer than commonly used annealed glass.

All About Physics

It warrants a speed surpassing 100 mph and a height exceeding 100 feet to send a baseball out of the park.

In Wrigley’s case, we determined the baseballs would be going at about 60 mph upon striking windows.

But we exceeded requirements and checked impact resistance up to 100 mph.

More Benefits of Tempered Glass in Pella® Windows

Even if you’re not thinking about an MLB home run propelling toward your windows, there are a variety of reasons to select tough, tempered glass in your Pella windows and doors.

It’s ideal for homeowners who want an additional level of safety from their windows or patio doors. Or those who are developing the next great baseball player.

Consider the benefits and highlights of Pella tempered glass options:

  • Durable glass like what is used in car windows.
  • Used where injuries from broken glass are a concern.
  • Generally breaks into small, square pieces rather than sharp shards if broken.
  • Glass doesn’t break apart if shattered.

Tempered glass is available in all Pella windows and patio doors. To discover more about impact windows and if they may be right for your home, call Pella of El Paso at 915-213-1497. Or, request a free, in-home consultation online.
