How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Windows are vital to your home’s beauty and comfort; they give you a wonderful view of outside, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your indoor space. Because they are so vital to a home, they see a lot of action. It’s wise to keep your windows clean so that continue to enhance your home.

Window glass can get dirty pretty fast, particularly with little hands or pets in the home, but fortunately glass cleaning isn’t difficult. Many Pella Windows and Doors Southwest windows have easy-clean features that also make it painless to clean the exterior of your windows from indoors, too. Looking for a simple, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors Southwest suggests:

  1. You can start by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that accumulates on the sill and ledges will remain there for a long time otherwise, and cleaning it out will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. Make sure not to use the same cleaning cloth that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment along the side of your window screen that faces in. You can also use this vacuum piece to suck up any leftover dirt and dust along your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to clean your window’s glass. You can make your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Then you can add the cleaner to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from multiple different directions for the best clean.
  4. Give your windows time to air dry and then rinse your glass with clean water if you see streaks.

There are more tips, too! We suggest that you clean your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution too fast and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors Southwest professionals select microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your attractive view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean in every season.
